What is mindfulness eating?
Mindfulness eating has been around for hundreds of years, and is based on the mindfulness theory. Mindfulness eating is when the skills of mindfulness meditation are utilized to help you to increase your awareness when eating. You become aware of all of the dimensions involved in eating, of your sensations and thoughts, and of the feelings of both your mind and body. Mindfulness in general increases your awareness of your consciousness, of what is happening around you currently and helps you to focus your mind. Therefore when applied to eating, it stops you from participating in unnecessary behaviours that are bad for you. This can help you to achieve better eating habits, so you get more satisfaction from your food both from nourishment and on an emotional level.
Mindfulness eating over the past 25 years has been shown to help both psychological and physical health, and to improve attitudes toward life in general. In fact mindfulness eating can help you to combat psychological problems like stress, anxiety and depression along with physical conditions such as heart disease, obesity and eating disorders.
Mindfulness eating is a deep practice. Each piece of food is considered before it is eaten; it is recognised for being what it is and for where it has come from to provide nourishment for us. Practising mindfulness eating helps you to realise that you are truly present, and helps your mind and body to become whole. Just think, if the food you are consuming is present, so are you. When you truly realise this, this will bring you joy and happiness, so when you eat your food you feel happy to be eating it, and therefore you appreciate more than before.
Mindfulness eating, like meditation, can help you on the path to enlightenment. However unlike meditation in some respects, mindfulness eating is often more successful when you practise it with other people. The joy and peace you get from eating your food should be shared with others to help them, and in turn other people practising can help you to reach your full potential.
Mindfulness eating makes you become aware of the reason you are eating, how you eat, and prevents you from eating for the wrong reasons. It has nothing to do with what you are eating but you become more aware of the taste and texture of your food. It prevents you from eating too much or too little because you become aware of the exact moment that you are completely satisfied. To truly achieve mindfulness eating, you must not judge yourself, or others you are practising mindfulness eating with.
Mindfulness eating is a great way of controlling when and how much you eat, so therefore is a very effective method of controlling your weight. Mindfulness eating stops you eating for the wrong reasons, and makes you pay full attention to your food and how you eat. By eating mindfully you feel like your life is more balanced and full of joy. It addresses the reasons that cause you to make wrong food choices, without using any rules or making you set any unrealistic expectations on yourself. It can help you to manage your eating habits so that you can maintain harmony in your life always.
