meditationThe Secret Weapon in Quitting Smoking is Meditation

There is no question that the challenge of quitting smoking is very difficult. Like many physical addictions, smoking becomes deeply entrenched in our lives. We not only become physically addicted to smoking, it becomes a habit that we associate with food, social times and relaxation. All of those behaviors have to be reprogrammed to successfully quit smoking.

Part of the difficulty in quitting smoking is that the average smoker tries many times before finally giving the habit up. That kind of trial and error process can be hard on the stamina of the smoker which can lead to frustration and a loss of the will to give up that dangerous habit. That is why meditation can be such a tremendous ally in the fight against smoking. Meditation can give you new resources and a new approach that is far better than going "cold turkey" and more hopeful than many medications that are on the market to help people give up smoking.

Companies that make their money selling anti-smoking products would probably not like it to become well known how much help meditation can be in kicking the habit. That is because you can learn the principles of meditation without a big investment of cost and the benefits in terms of helping the patient overcome the smoking habit often begin to "kick in" quickly. Since that might take some money out of the pockets of the anti-smoking industry, it makes sense they don’t go to a lot of effort to let people know about the positive effect meditation can have on helping them give up the smoking habit.

One of the reasons that smoking becomes as deeply ingrained, as a habit is that it becomes a resource to turn to when stressed. The physical relaxation that is caused by the nicotine helps bring a calm and relaxation that helps people when they are in a stressful situation. Meditation is superior to many anti-smoking aids because unlike most of them, meditation provides an alterative resource to help cope with or eliminate the effects of stress. But unlike smoking, meditation doesn’t create a new physical need that must be served routinely, it doesn’t bring with it all of the physical problems that smoking carries and you don't have to buy your stress relief by the pack or by the carton when that stress relief is meditation.

It should be noted that you should not consider meditation your only line of attack against the grip that smoking has on your health. Unlike other smoking "cures", you can start learning to use meditation to combat smoking without a doctor's authorization because there is no way it could have an adverse effect on your health. But continue to work with your doctor so he or she can give you every resource to kick the smoking habit. The odds are that when you tell your doctor that you are also beginning to use meditation to help quit smoking, the response will be enthusiastic. Doctors are well aware of the power that meditation can have to improve physical, emotional and psychological health. And all of those factors must come in to play if you are going to quit smoking.

Also, be aware that meditation is not an overnight cure. But be encouraged that there is no time like the present to begin to explore meditation as a way to help you quit smoking. If you have tried every other remedy under the sun, with a little online research into the basic techniques of meditation, you can begin learning how to do it in a matter of minutes.
