What should we know before trying to define spirituality?
According to common belief, there is something more to this world than what we perceive through our senses, that we generally call spirituality. Tentatives to clearly define spirituality have been numerous, as it always happens with something that we can't really put our finger on.
Many dictionaries define spirituality as a religious concept, but there are voices claiming that it is limitative to define spirituality only from this perspective and that spirituality can manifest also outside religious beliefs and practices. We could define spirituality as activating an inner world, composed of our own beliefs, principles, thoughts, emotions and using it as a mean to connect to something greater than our corporeal experiences. External teachings are absolutely necessary in building religious beliefs, but not in building spirituality.
There are religious persons who lack spirituality because they only take over automatically what they have been told to do without filtering teachings through their inner system of values and there are spiritual persons who can find a greater meaning of their life in something else than religion. There is a nice saying that we can find useful when we define spirituality in relation with the religion: "Religion is for those who fear going to hell, Spirituality is for those who have been there". Spirituality can be latent or active, but either way it exists in all of us. Most often, the way to activate spirituality goes through what we call "a living hell".
Besides the demarcation from religion, when we try to define spirituality we should take into account more aspects, punctually described below:
- We can define spirituality in quantitative terms because not all the people enable it in the same measure. The amount of spirituality that we possess depends on the efforts we put in the process of developing this side of us.
- Life is possible outside spirituality, but we are talking here about a fade life. Spirituality is a way of enriching life and of enjoying it to the fullest.
- We can't define spirituality based on a single belief or emotion. Spirituality is an assembly of inner mechanisms that determine our vision on life and our way of being.
- Spirituality can come naturally, but it needs to be cultivated. Just as we do exercise for our physical condition, we should work on our spirituality too. Practicing meditation, helping others, learning about self-development, spending more time in the middle of the nature, praying, looking for well-being beyond material stuff are just a few ways of nurturing spirituality.
Everyone can define spirituality in his own original way. Here is one of the simplest definitions we can find: spirituality is a way of being. Indeed, we can define spirituality as just one way of being among others. Or better said as a way of well-being at everyone's hand.
