meditationZen Meditation Can Give You A New Zest For Life

Zen meditation was originally developed by Buddhist monks, who still practice the technique to this day. However, the great news is that you do not need to be a Buddhist to be able to reap the benefits that Zen meditation can bring into your life. In fact, you do not have to belong to any specific culture, or hold any specific religious beliefs in order to meditate - it really is something that anyone can do. In this article we want to give you a quick introduction explaining what Zen meditation is all about, how it can benefit your physical and emotional well being, and also give you a simple exercise so that you can try out a Zen meditation technique for yourself.

Zen meditation is one of the most popular meditative techniques because it is very easy to learn, and can be extremely effective even when practiced for just a few minutes each day. The main aim when practicing Zen meditation is to achieve a stillness, or calmness, within yourself which allows you to truly experience the beauty of the present moment. Unlike other methods of meditation, people who practice Zen do not enter into any form of trance; instead they are fully awake and fully aware at all times.

There are many sitting positions associated with Zen meditation, and different people find that they prefer different positions. There really is no right or wrong way to practice meditation - the most important thing is that you do what is most comfortable for you. Many people prefer the lotus or half lotus positions but the best thing to do is to try each position until you find the one that is most comfortable for your body.

Here's a simple Zen meditation exercise that you can try out right now: first of all find a nice quiet spot where you won't be disturbed and adopt your favored position. As you sit you should let your mind slowly empty of all thoughts, concerns or worries. Take a slow breath pulling the air deep into your lungs, and then gently exhale. As you repeat this your breath will settle into a natural rhythm. Focus all of your attention on your breathing as you slowly inhale and exhale. If you find that your mind is starting to wander, gently bring it back to focus on your breathing. After a short time your heart rate will slow, and you will find yourself entering a peaceful and reflective frame of mind. You can remain in this state for as long as you wish before resuming your daily tasks.

By practicing Zen meditation for 10-15 minutes per day you will find that you have a new zest for life; you will be calmer and much more able to focus your attention on the current task at hand. Zen meditation also helps you to cope with stress in a much more effective way, and deal with whatever the day has in store for you with increased vigor and enthusiasm.
