meditationThe Answer Lies In Stream of Consciousness

We have all had those problems that we stress and worry about for days on end. We hope the answer will fall into our lap and we can solve whatever the problem may be. More often than not, the answer lies in our own stream of consciousness. The stream of consciousness is our interior thoughts or monologue. They are the streaming thoughts that constantly invade our mind every hour of every day. You may be a person who carries on a conversation with yourself; this is your stream consciousness throwing various topics at you. Some people are just better at problem solving when they think aloud.

The mind is constantly going with thoughts flowing one right after another. Think of it as a river; a river is constantly moving and flowing with the current. Likewise, your stream of consciousness is constantly moving. It is often this ever flowing thought process that keeps people up at night. Learning to meditate can really help slow down the stream of consciousness and help you relax.

The stream of consciousness was first used in 1890 by William James as a way to describe a constant flow of thought and awareness. The phrase is also used in fiction novels as an inner dialogue to help the reader take a peek inside the mind of a character. Both uses for word are similar. Stream of consciousness is a constant flow of thought and it is our own personal inner dialogue. When we struggle with problems and issues, our mind will cycle through a number of solutions and possible outcomes. The mind is a powerful thing and it is easy to get caught up in worrying about the worst case scenario. Often times, the simplest solution is the correct answer, but the stream of consciousness doesn't tell you the correct answer.

It is easy to dwell on the negative thoughts that pass through our minds each day; instead of the positive ones. Even if we don't have a pending problem, our stream of consciousness is still working like crazy. Thoughts are coming and going as fast as we can think them. We can pick out the things we want to dwell on and let other thoughts just coast on past. You may have a thought suggesting you need some new jeans which leads to a negative thought about your weight. More often then not we dwell on the negative thought, in this case our weight, instead of allowing that thought to pass on through.

Awareness of our thoughts is a skill many strive for. Learn to acknowledge each thought but let the negative ones keep going. Awareness of the stream of consciousness can also help find the answers to our problems. Maybe you are curious as to why people think you are a downer. With awareness, you might notice you dwell on all the negative thoughts flowing through the mind. Now that you know the problem, you can take steps to fix it.

Start a journal when issues come up. Take five to ten minutes each day and jot down every thought flowing down your stream of consciousness. Wait a few hours or days and then look back at what you wrote. You may be surprised that the answer was there all along hiding out in the stream of consciousness.
