meditationLife as Spiritual Food for Thought

We are often advised to follow our heart in any circumstance of our life, but on the other hand it is said than only foolish people make decisions based only on their feelings, without giving it a lot of thought. It comes out that using our emotional side as well as our objectivity and rationality in the process of reasoning is the best thing to do. Giving a spiritual thought to everything that is happening with us and around us may seem impossible because the spirit is associated with our soul, feelings, emotions, while the thought is the result of our intellect.

But spiritual thought is not an oxymoron, as it seems. Scientific research does not limit anymore the definition of intelligence to the cold process of reasoning executed exclusively by our brain. Now the concept refers to a range of subsets, including spiritual intelligence. So, we as humans have the ability to give a spiritual dimension to our thought. Spiritual intelligence is a way to cover the human inborn need of connecting to something greater then us. It was noticed that people who have this ability to develop spiritual thought based on what they experience are also endowed with transcendence capacity, high level of consciousness, ability to associate their daily activities with a sacred meaning, higher capacity of listening, higher empathy, capacity to approach practical problems from a deeper spiritual perspective, a greater engagement in virtuous behaviors like forgiveness, compassion, lack of selfishness, gratitude or helping others.

The spiritual intelligence helps us find spiritual food for thought in all our experiences, even in the most pragmatic and corporeal ones. Having a spiritual thought is also possible because spirituality manifests at all levels of the human beings: emotional, intellectual, and behavioral. In her book, "Spirituality for Mommies", Paula M. Ezop writes that spiritual feeling becomes possible through heartfulness, spiritual thought through mindfulness and spiritual acts through soulfulness.

When we become mindful of something we engage in the process not only our intellect, but our whole being: our attention, motivation, emotions, energy and all the other inner resources. All elements of our spiritual side converge to that thought which places us in a bigger context that the one perceivable through our senses.

Having a spiritual thought is not about thinking positively or negatively, although the outcome is always positive. Spirituality itself can't be defined in terms of good or bad. A spiritual thought is about becoming aware of what external factors move within us, no matter if this change makes us happy or miserable. Just by acknowledging it in our minds we start a spiritual journey, on the way of which we will experience the feeling of well-being.
