Rene Descartes Second Meditation is Historically Important.
Second meditation is only a fraction of a six-part series of philosophical ideologies published by Rene Descartes in 17th century France. It mainly concerns meditating by suspending a belief in anything that might be considered doubtful.
This is a more European approach to meditation and was originally published as philosophical treatise in Latin. Second meditation was conceived by Rene Descartes and is actually considered to be the foundation of Western meditation. Although Descartes spent much of his life in the Dutch Republic and wrote in Latin, his work was later published into French by the Duke of Luynes. Of course, now his works are available in different languages, including English.
-Rene Descartes is considered to be the Father of Modern Philosophy.
Second meditation, which is part of what is now known simply as a complete work named ‘Mediations’, is still studied at most Universities today. In fact, this work is considered to be the main foundation of Western Philosophy. It differs from Eastern meditation in the fact that it questions whether man, when in doubt, actually exists at all.
The concepts of second meditation do not stand alone. This is because there are six parts to this meditation practice. The first meditation calls into question that whether as humans, we have been mislead by our senses. One part of this theory involves that if we dream something that is not true, we must wonder if we have been duped by our dreams. This is because for Descartes, dreams were senses, and not reality.
-To further pursue his theory, second meditation was introduced.
Second meditation is more about the fact that we only have access to a sum total of all of our ideas. This limits us in the way that we perceive the world. So we must separate our mind from our body in order to prove that we exist. In other words, to quote Rene Descartes himself –from his book ‘Discourse on Method’ – “I think, therefore I am.”
Second meditation leads to the next phases of Descartes philosophies.
The next phase is third meditation, which involve the ides of the advantageous, the innate, and the invented. Second meditation, like all of Descartes theories, was based on the European concept of a Christian God in 1647. So this has to be taken into consideration when deliberating about second meditation.
-Unlike second meditation, third meditation argues the existence of a supreme being.
This meditation concept has more to do with the original concept that all life must come from somewhere, and energy can neither be created nor destroyed. This may be the predecessor to Einstein’s theories, because what many people don’t know about Descartes was that he was a scientist as well as a philosopher.
Second meditation is only one part of Descartes theories. In order to understand this historical philosopher, it is important to read this treatise as well as all of his other works. For anyone who is interested in meditation, these volumes are important when it come to understanding a more religious point of meditation. More than that, the entire philosophy of Rene Descartes is important as well. Comparing his point of view to a Hindu or Buddhist approach to meditation, as well as other philosophies and religion, will make anyone who is interested in second meditation much more well-rounded.
