More and more people are turning to Samatha meditation to escape the stresses of daily life. If you have ever felt like the weight of the world was pressing down on your shoulders, or that the events in your life were passing you by at 100 miles per hour while all you could do was stand aside and watch - and who hasn't felt like that given all of the pressures that we face in our hectic schedules - then Samatha meditation could be a great way of reinstalling a sense of inner calm into your life.

Indeed, if you were to literally translate the name, you would find that 'samatha' actually means 'calm', which is fitting because Samatha meditation is well known for creating a feeling of inner peace and tranquility.

A lot of meditation techniques require you to completely empty your mind of all thoughts; however Samatha meditation is slightly different because it requires you to focus all of your attention on to a single object. In Buddhist meditation there are traditionally 40 things that can be used to focus on, including your breathing, or repeating a mantra or scripture. However, you do not need to be a Buddhist to practice this technique, in fact it doesn't matter what religious or cultural background you come from - Samatha meditation is a tool that can be beneficial for everyone. The truth is that you can focus your attention on anything you like, it doesn't really matter what you choose; the important thing is that you have something, anything, to focus on.

By regularly practicing Samatha meditation you will find that eventually all of the energy and attention you are focusing will turn into the purest form of concentration, and through this concentration you will discover a state of quiet contemplation where your mind is free to consider and reflect upon all aspects of your life. It is also common to practice Samatha meditation alongside other forms, such as Insight meditation for instance as the two techniques are mutually beneficial and work together to instill a feeling of deep and peaceful relaxation.

We all experience feelings of stress, anxiety, worry and frustration in our daily lives, and if left unchecked these feelings can snowball until they become so deeply engrained inside us that they effectively take over our lives. The only way to truly combat these feelings is to learn how to control the mind, and how to establish a feeling of inner peace through techniques like Samatha meditation.

Samatha meditation is a great tool in its own right, however it becomes even more powerful when combined with other meditation methods and is a great way of maintaining the inner balance between your physical, emotional and spiritual well being that is vital for a healthy, happy and enlightened life. Samatha meditation is not only beneficial on an emotional level, it can also benefit your physical health too - there have been several research studies that have shown that meditating for as little as a few minutes each day can improve your immune system, and even defeat conditions such as sleep problems and high blood pressure.
