#130 - Reduce your mind chatter with meditation

In India, they have a very old and very true way of talking about the brain- they explain that the brain is a lot like a thousand monkeys all banging around in a cage fighting each other. How often does this apply to your brain when you try to clear it out and make some sense of the chaos raging within?

Each of our thoughts and concerns is like one of those thousand monkeys banging around in your brain, and each of those thoughts and concerns constantly fights with the others for dominance. After all, we would bet that each time you try and really focus on one line of thinking at least a dozen others pop up trying to steal away your attention. Thankfully, meditation offers a way to tame your unruly thoughts and eliminate all of the mental chatter that keeps you from thinking about anything all the way through to its conclusion.

Meditation is all about tuning out all that random mental noise and sharpening your focus to a razor’s edge. All you have to do is turn inward to your inherent stillness, while blocking out everything else. Meditation is all about traveling through the internal mental distractions and leaving them behind in the pursuit of your true nature.

When you first begin to practice meditation, it’s understandable that you won’t have a lot of focus. It’s understandable that you’ll probably have a really hard time tuning out the mental chatter. But if you are able to clear it all away for one moment, then the next time you practice you’ll be able to find that quiet moment easier and hold on to it longer. And the more you meditate, the easier it will be to quiet the mental chatter and focus more powerfully.

Learning to quiet the mental chatter during meditation will teach you how to eliminate the excess noise in your daily life. The deeper you can go into meditation, the more present you can be in your daily life. The more clearly you’ll be able to think and work through problems, the easier it will be to ignore the distractions in your brain and lock in on what really matters. It takes time and practice, but that quiet and clarity is one of the most important things you can develop in your life.
