#45 - Purifying your character with meditation

Though many associate meditation with inner peace, health and reducing stress, meditation also helps purify your character. One of the greatest strongholds faced by people worldwide is the inability to forgive. When someone is wronged they may have suffered deep hurt and internal wounds that last a lifetime. These wounds, or psychological trauma, can be so deep that there are lifelong effects. It is imperative that those dealing with psychological trauma or unforgiveness learn the skills necessary to deal with their pain without fear and stress so they can move forward in their lives. Meditation is a tool that can greatly help purify your character and leave psychic traumas and unforgiveness behind.

Unforgiveness can rob you of your joy of life, fill you with bitterness and prevent you from developing long lasting and enjoyable loving relationships. It may not be necessary to sustain a relationship with someone who has caused you great emotional or even physical harm, but it is imperative that you release that person from your anger and forgive. Meditation can provide you with the proper mental/emotional state needed to face those situations safely, conquering the pain and hurt from whatever it is you experienced.

Meditation not only helps you forgive others, but can also help you forgive yourself. By bringing the mind and body into a state of harmony, peace and well-being, you can honestly look at yourself and accept your own character flaws. You can purify your character by addressing issues where you have wronged others. Meditation can help you visualize yourself apologizing to others in a safe setting as well as help you visualize receiving forgiveness for any hurt you’ve caused others.

Likewise, you can use meditation to visualize yourself facing someone who has caused you great harm and forgiving them. Sometimes meditation is used to prepare a person for making an apology in person, other times meditation is used to forgive those whom are no longer part of our lives, so we can move forward.

Meditation can increase awareness of our own character flaws and help us to accept our own humanity and failures as well as those flaws we see in others. Through meditation and forgiveness, we can bring resolution to situations and move forward with love and understanding, thereby purifying our character.
