meditationNew Spirituality vs. Religion

In recent years, new spirituality seems to be a term with many meanings. Instead of asking someone if they are religious, we now ask them if they are spiritual. This form of new spirituality covers a large group of people, but can be confusing. You can be religious and not spiritual, or spiritual but not religious. Although they are different concepts, they are also very similar. New spirituality has to do with the thought that being spiritual is far better than naming just one type of religion. New spirituality is becoming one with nature, meaning you come to the understanding that we are all part of each other. Religion has to do with serving one God and He is the creator of all things. If you examine those two statements closely, you will see that they are really similar. All things come from God or all things are one; those are both the same concept just worded differently.

One of the largest problems with pitting new spirituality and religion against each other is that the former is describe with all things good and the latter is described as negative. This leads people down a path of wrongful thinking. There are good and bad with both and that depends on the thinking of whoever is describing each one. Often the difference is only putting a name to the higher power. New spirituality uses the term higher power to simply describe something greater than ourselves. This higher power can be anything really as long as we believe it is greater than we are. Religion names their higher power; Christians call it God, Buddhism calls it Buddha, Muslims call it Allah and so on and so forth.

Many of the negative points people put on religion, can also be put on new spirituality. For instance, organized religion is based on a book of teachings and a set of rules. New spirituality is also based on a set of rules, rules that teach meditation, yoga, and becoming one with nature. Organized religions attend services once a week to learn about these rules. New spirituality has classes, seminars, books, and retreats to teach the art of meditation or spiritual connectivity.

There is an argument that religion is based on a group of people with the same beliefs while new spirituality is based on private and personal beliefs. In reality, they can both fit into either category. Religion is still a personal belief; each person will form their own personal relationship with their god and adapt only the rules which apply to that relationship. Spirituality is the same way; although it is personal there are still rules in which a person will attempt to follow. Spiritual people seek out groups of like-minded individuals who have the same belief system as they do.

New spirituality and religion are the same thing, but completely different at the same time. Their meanings depend on each individual person. People who do not want to be associated with organized religion will often say they are spiritual. Likewise, those who have a specific belief in one deity may say they are Christian or Jewish or religious. Those who are religious don't necessarily have to believe in organized religion and those who are spiritual can have faith in one specific god. It is really a matter of preference and what you feel calling your belief system.
