Mindfulness is a term that is now on the lips and minds of many people. This interest has come about as people are seeking to make sense of their lives and ways to better living and health. Mindfulness is the art of developing an awareness of what is happening in the present or in the now as opposed to dwelling on that of the past or the future. Mindfulness involves attending to your senses and their response to stimuli. This includes noting things like your breathing, how your body feels at any given moment, and the thoughts you are having.

Mindfulness is good for overall health and this is based on the benefits it offers those who engage in it. Mindfulness is widely used along with cognitive therapy to help patients improve their conditions. Here are some of the health related issues where mindfulness can benefit those who use it.

Depression.

When patients who suffer from depression are put through a mindfulness intervention program, they generally experience a vast reduction in residual depressive symptoms after a depressive episode.

Stress.

Mindfulness is often used to help people who suffer from stress on a day to day basis to effectively manage their stress. Sleep Problems. Many people who have a serious illness like cancer tend to have a sleeping problem. Mindfulness is believed to be of great help in reducing sleep disturbances when used as a part of an overall therapy program.

Eating Disorders.

One of the fastest growing health problems today are eating disorders. From bulimia to anorexia many persons especially girls and women suffer from and struggle with some type of eating disorder. When mindfulness is used as part of a treatment program it has been reported that behaviours and emotional control were significantly improved. There was also an improvement seen in self-awareness and increased self-acceptance.

Anxiety Disorders.

Persons suffering with anxiety disorder tend to experience a serious reduction in the level of anxiety experienced and depressive symptoms when mindfulness is made a part of the treatment.

Relationship problems.

It has been shown in a recent study that a person whose personality traits show a higher level of mindfulness is more than likely to have much more satisfying relationships. These persons are also likely to be able to handle the stress related to the relationship in a constructive way. Persons who made mindfulness a part of their lives tended to react to stress far better when conflict arises in a relationship another study found. Mindfulness is therefore linked to the well-being of a relationship.

Mindfulness is not a momentary approach to a healthy life. It has to be practised over an extended period of time in a consistent manner for effective results. Mindfulness is achieved in a number of different ways including meditation, listening to music, and house cleaning. As long as the approach to mindfulness is the right one, i.e. focusing on what is happening now and quieting your inner voice. For a better and healthier life, try being more mindful.
