meditationA Happier you through Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy

Darkness, gloom, sadness, pain, loneliness, abandonment, alone, lost; these are some of the few words that many who have suffered from chronic depression use to describe how they feel. Just reading those few words alone is enough to bring on dark feelings. Those who suffer from chronic depression and chronic unhappiness live in a world filled with feelings like that almost every day of their lives. The world can seem to be a dark and scary place when you are constantly feeling alone, abandoned, unwanted, or cast aside like an unwanted piece of rubbish. Many who suffer from chronic depression often turn to drugs, alcohol or self-mutilation in an effort to alleviate their depression. Those who seek help from their doctor are often given medications that treat the symptoms, without managing to treat the cause. Unfortunately, not only do these methods not work, they're also highly dangerous and self-destructive. The only way to truly alleviate depression is to treat the cause. This can be done through mindfulness-based cognitive therapy.

Mindfulness based cognitive therapy was developed based on a process known as mindfulness meditation. To understand what mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is, you must first understand what mindfulness meditation, mindfulness, and stress reduction are.

Mindfulness is the concept of being aware of one's surroundings, as well as one's most inner being. Mindfulness is being open and aware of the present moment and its importance. It involves controlling oneself completely in every instance. Mindfulness is also found in Buddhist culture, as it is one of the eight paths to enlightenment.

Mindfulness meditation is a manner in which to train your mind to become self-aware, and to discover your true self. Mindfulness meditation is the process of meditating while keeping oneself completely open to the singular moment that one finds oneself in. Unlike other forms of controlled meditation, you do not block out the surrounding world, only allow it to take its proper place in the hierarchy of importance in that single moment. Mindfulness stress reduction is a recently developed process that uses the combined techniques of gentle yoga, meditation and other relaxation techniques to reduce the stress in a person's life, thereby ultimately increasing that person's quality of life. Mindfulness stress reduction operates on the principle that most diseases are products of the mind, and many believe that by synchronizing the mind and body and by understanding their individual needs, one can heal physical ailments.

Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is a process that was developed based on the concept of mindfulness meditation and mindfulness stress reduction. It aims to treat different diseases of the mind on an individual basis, without the use of pharmaceutical drugs. Courses in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy teach those who suffer from chronic bouts of depression and other diseases of the mind what triggers their episodes, and determines effective means of dealing with them. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy teaches them different techniques for managing stress and anxiety, anger and depression.
