meditationTapping into the Metta Meditation Methods

Deciding that you are going to start making the time to practice meditation is something that is a deeply personal decision. While many people strive to meditate, it is important that you spend some time really reviewing the options that are available to you, and discovering exactly how you can begin to master the techniques. While meditation is all essentially meditation, there are a few distinct differences between the styles. Many people find that they prefer one type of meditation over another and finding the style that you prefer and are most comfortable with is extremely important in order to be really satisfied with meditation.

Metta meditation is just one of the methods that are available to practice meditation with. The primary focus of Metta meditation is the love of things, such as oneself, others, items, and life itself. Trying to focus on warm feelings and positive energy is a primary focus of Metta and is not always as easy to do as it can sound.

Those who are deeply engaged in practicing Metta tend to do so for hours a day, often for an hour in the morning, and another hour at night. However, if you are just getting started, or you are not able to dedicate that much time, as little as 15 minutes a day spent practicing Metta meditation is ample time to help achieve some of the benefits.

You must take the time to carefully prepare the area in which you are going to practice Metta meditation. This will allow you to create the perfect space that is free of stress and negative energy, and instead focus on the positive aspects that Metta can bring to your life. This means it is very important to find even a small area in your home that is not used for sleeping, exercising, or even working of any form to use. This will allow you to clear your mind of the problems surrounding you and instead focus on the positive breathing, messages and energy that meditation brings.

Metta meditation is one of the forms of meditation that uses chanting to help bring about peace as well. Standard phrases that are said include things such as:

  • May I be safe and protected.

  • May I be peaceful and happy.

  • May I be healthy and strong.

In Metta meditation these positive and reinforcing messages help you to embrace a calm and warm feeling about yourself, and all of the situations and circumstances that surround yourself. Repeating these phrases slowly to yourself will allow you to start to accept your own inner thoughts, as well as come to peace with yourself. These chants are standard for all who practice Metta meditation and while you are free to adjust them slightly, they are the recognized and accepted chants. Learning these chants and working to center your thoughts, and bring a positive energy into your life can be a very useful and helpful technique to follow.
