#14 - How meditation makes you worry less

Why is worry so bad to experience? It’s pretty simple. Worry is a kind of constant, non-stop stress. Worry makes us stress out even when we aren’t in stressful situations. It makes us scared, it makes us clench up, and it keeps us from focusing on the here-and-now and forces us to feel bad about something that hasn’t even happened yet. Worry makes us sick too. If you find that you are someone who is always worrying about the future, who is always stressing yourself out needlessly and always making yourself sick because of it, then starting meditation might be the best thing you can do for yourself.

You see, practicing meditation is the best way to worry less. While meditation is a pretty complex subject overall with a lot of layers, it really comes down to one thing- letting go. When you meditate you let go of everything that isn’t in the present moment. You let go of all those thoughts swimming around in your head, pushing their way to the forefront of your attention. You let go of everything you are feeling in your body. You let go of what you did before your session and you let go of everything that comes after your session.

Meditation is about letting go of everything except the present moment. And when you are totally present in the moment, you can’t possibly be worrying about anything. You can’t worry unless you are thinking about the future, and you can’t think about the future when you are lost in the moment. And in the moment, there is nothing wrong. And when you understand and truly feel that you are in the moment and nothing is wrong, then you can’t possibly hold on to your worry.

This ability to be present and to focus on the here-and-now is one of the main benefits of meditation; and it spills out into every other moment of your life. Not only will you let go of worry while you meditate, but you will learn to let go of it in any other moment by simply being present and letting all those concerns of what-might-be slip away.
