#119 - Meditation increases your focus and concentration.

If you have trouble concentrating, meditation can help. Whether you have to sit through a day of high school or an all day seminar for work, concentration is important. Essentially, meditation is concentration. When we meditate we take direct control of our minds and keep them fixed, often on a word, the breath, a feeling, or an object. Meditation is a way of training the mind to keep it from wandering at will from thought to thought.

The normal, untrained mind is often compared to a monkey. Monkeys rarely sit still and lack the ability to focus or control their impulses. Monkeys go from tree to tree the way our minds wander from thought to thought. When we meditate, we put our monkey-minds on a leash, teach them to sit, and train them to work for us. Otherwise, we just end up following them around as they jump wildly from one thought to the next.

Once the mind comes under our control, we can focus for any length of time, learn more, and retain more information. This state of concentration can even be used to help us turn off our thoughts and go to sleep more easily. Often, we get better sleep and get to sleep sooner, meaning we are more rejuvenated throughout our day, and this also translates into the ability to concentrate.

Remember, the brain is like any other muscle, and it must be exercised to stay in shape . Meditation is weight-lifting for the brain. When we focus and calm our minds, we harness their incredible power and use it in our daily lives. We are keeping our minds in optimal shape so that they work the best when we need them the most.

It is easy to get started with meditation so that you can regain your focus and control. Meditating is a wonderful way to improve your concentration, and you can begin right now.
