meditationDepression can be controlled through meditation.

Meditation can help manage depression if you practice it daily. According to medical experts, a ten minute session on a daily basis will help give you a sense of being in charge of this condition. Even if you are on medication, meditation can be a powerful supplement when you feel overwhelmed or disoriented. This is because once you learn how to meditate; you can do it anywhere or at anytime. Also, meditation sessions that will help with depression can work in as little a ten or fifteen minutes. This makes meditation a great addition or replacement to medication.

-There are specific meditation techniques to help with depression. If you have been diagnosed with depression, it is always important to follow your doctor’s orders and take your prescriptions. However, if there are times when you feel anxious, even with medication, meditation is always right at hand. There are many different kinds of exercises, and there are some relaxation techniques that are specifically aimed at depression.

-Biofeedback helps calm you down. One meditation technique, specifically aimed at depression is called biofeedback. Biofeedback actually falls more into the medical realm, but is an exercise where western medicine meets eastern philosophy. Biofeedback is based on the premise that when someone is anxious, the body restricts blood flow to the hands and feet. The premise is that if you warm your hands, the blood flow increases and the muscles relax. The result is feeling less tense and more relaxed. If you feel something like a panic attack coming on here is what you can try:

Sit in a comfortable chair and rest your hands in your lap with your fingers touching. If you wish, you can hold a thermometer between your fingers to monitor your temperature before and after you meditate. Then, focus your mind on your fingertips until you feel a tingling sensation. Keep your mind focused on your hands until they reach a temperature of 97 degrees Fahrenheit and then hold this state for about ten minutes. The reason why this exercise works for depression is that it changes the chemistry in your body, and therefore relieves the depression.

-There is a whole world of meditation the helps with depression. There are many other meditation exercises that fight depression. The reason why they work is because they change your mindset, which in turn changes the body chemistry. As you can see, it’s easy to get started, and even easier to learn more. This is because there are many books, cd’s, and even guided sessions that you can download right from the Internet. There is also music to help you focus and guided sessions if you are new to meditation. Relaxation sessions only last from ten to twenty minutes, so there is not a big time commitment. Meditation can be practiced anywhere, and if you are looking for alternatives to medication for depression, you can get started today in as little as ten minutes.
