It’s easy to understand what a Mantra is. It is a sound, word, or group of words that is used during meditation. It is one of the most common practices of meditation and there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of mantras in different cultures.

A mantra is interpreted according to the religion, meditation practice or spirituality of each person. Some people believe they have supra natural properties while others think they are ordinary, if effective, ways to help meditate.

Regardless of religion or spiritual beliefs, a mantra is used as an integral part of meditation. Meditation requires the practitioner to train his or her mind to do one of two things. The first one is to focus his or her mind in a single idea or image to the exclusion of all other thoughts. The second one, which is more difficult, is to free the mind of any thought whatsoever, leaving it blank. Both of these feats are very difficult to achieve and require a lot of training and dedication.

A mantra helps the meditation practitioner to train his or her mind by giving a thought to focus on. It usually involves the repetition of the mantra several times in order to keep the mind focused on it and nothing else. This focus can depend on the type of training.

Sometimes the practitioner focuses his or her mind in the sound of the mantra. This is also one reason why some mantras sound musical or at least pleasant to the ear. It also involves focusing the mind in the correct intonation and pronunciation. By training the mind to focus on these aspects, the practitioner is able later to focus his or her mind better on the thought of his or her choice when dealing with more advanced meditation practices.

Other meditation practitioners focus on the words of the mantra. Again, there are different aspects to this. One of them involves the meaning of the words, and very often they include goals that the practitioner wants to achieve, such as health, wisdom, or prosperity. Another aspect involves memorizing and repeating long and complex mantras, which then serve as some sort of spiritual tongue twister. Finally, there are a few people that believe that the words in a mantra have some magic in them. In this case, its repetition would be the meditation equivalent of uttering magical words.

Finally, the way a mantra is used also depends on your guide and meditation practices. Some of them are said as slowly as possible, while others are almost sung, and there are even some that are repeated only mentally. It will all depend on the instructions of your meditation guide and how important or effective your sessions are over a long time.
