Motor skills – movements of the body designed to complete a certain task – actually derive from the work and artistry of the brain. As the brain determines a movement, it sends a signal through the nerves which results in a controlled movement of muscle groups. While this may sound complex, you see motor skills in action every day – as you pick up your morning paper, log on to your computer or start your car. You can also see incredible development in motor skills in children as their bodies and minds start to work together better, augmenting their ability to move and respond well.
And meditation can help increase both gross and fine motor skills for practitioners, improving your efficiency of movement, overall gracefulness and ability to multi-task.
Meditation provides an atmosphere of deep relaxation beneficial to the mind and body, offering myriad physiological effects such as lower blood pressure and a slower heart rate. When the body is extremely relaxed, the mind, nerves and muscles work at an optimum level, allowing for the enhancement of a variety of motor performance skills.
When stressed and anxious, the nervous system is disturbed, impacting an individual’s gross and fine motor skills. When stress and anxiety decrease through the simple practice of meditation, the mind can be more creative and allow the body to move and feel better, boosting your body’s overall performance, ability to adapt and move with efficiency.
As you learn meditation techniques and gain experience in focusing your mind and your breath, you’ll find that your cognitive skills are also enhanced. Meditation brings the body and mind into an improved state of awareness – this is in stark contrast to the absentmindedness or lack of focus that sometimes permeates the mind. When the mind is overloaded with stress, the muscles no longer respond as well.
Meditation helps the body and mind work together in harmony, enhancing motor performance, not to mention mental and emotional clarity and function. Meditation elicits an amazing state of alertness and awareness, working harmoniously with the nervous system and enhancing your motor skills.
