meditationTips on How to Meditate For Beginners

A popular dictionary has as one of its definitions of meditation the process of engaging in mental exercise for the purpose of reaching a heightened level of spiritual awareness.

Whether you accept this as the definition of meditation, have one of your own, or one given to you by a spiritual guide, meditation is the most helpful techniques to live a healthy and full life. It is a shame that meditation is also one of the most overlooked healing and spiritual growth methods in todays materialistic, profit-driven society.

While the practice of meditation can be very simple at the beginning, it is always better to have a guide that will get you started. And since mediation is often linked closely with religion and spirituality, one of the best places to find a guide on meditation is your own religious leadership. Almost every religion has some form of meditation practice, with many religious leaders having techniques on how to meditate for beginners as part of their training.

Of course, you can also practice meditation outside of your religion if you decide to or if you do not have a religion. Courses on how to meditate for beginners are taught in many spiritual and health centers all over the country.

People learn to meditate for many reasons: to achieve a connection with God, for spiritual insight, to improve health, to relax, etc. The ultimate goal of any meditation technique is to achieve inner peace.

As you can imagine, the way each meditation technique works is different, although many of them aim at concentrating the mind on a single idea, object, or words, while trying to eliminate the mental noise that is caused by our fears, worries, desires, and expectations. Once we manage to eliminate that noise through the practice of meditation, especially for beginners, we reach a state of mental peace which can allow ourselves to analyze our circumstances better in order be better decision makers, reach a higher level of awareness, or simply just feel good about ourselves.

Regardless of the technique you choose for meditating, here are some useful tips on how to meditate for beginners who want to practice at home.
  • Get some basic information that you can consult whenever you need it. A book or a manual is ideal and can be easily bought in a bookstore.
  • Understand that meditation gives results in the long term, just like you would not expect to see any changes after just one day at the gym.
  • Set a schedule for meditation. If you know you have your meditation session at exactly the same hour everyday, it will be much harder to miss it.
  • Make arrangements so that you are not disturbed. Turn off your cell phone, disconnect your landline, arrange for someone to take care of your pets, etc. Knowing that everything is taken care of helps you concentrate better.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. Some people prefer to wear sandals or even be barefooted.
  • Stretch before you start your meditation session. That way, your muscles will be relaxed while you meditate.
  • Select a comfortable position at first. You’ll be able to take more difficult positions with practice, but while you are a beginner, you want to be as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
  • Stay away from alcohol, tobacco and non-prescription medications for at least 24 hours before your meditation session.
