Few of us like pain. While pain has a role to play, such as reminding us to take our hand off of a hot burner, chronic pain can begin to dominate our lives and ruin any activity we are involved in. That is why we often seek out pain relief tools or resources. While some drugs promise to deliver pain relief, it is right to worry about the side affects of taking drugs for pain. Side effects and the threat of spending our lives dependent on a drug is why many turn to meditation.
The reason meditation is so effective in pain relief is it gives you the ability to relax and focus on things other than pain. The worst part of pain is our resistance to it. When we feel pain, we fight against it, believing it doesn't belong and must go. This struggle against our pain makes our lives much harder and the pain much worse. It does take some perfecting of the skill of meditation to realize real pain relief. No one should expect results right away, but it is a worthwhile skill to develop, because it is one that will be useful in many situations in life.
Unlike using drugs for pain relief, you can call on your ability to manage pain through meditation instantly in any situation. The habit of meditation very naturally teaches you to exert mind over matter and over the physical state. The simple steps of sitting in a meditative posture, controlling your breathing and focusing the mind off of the physical and onto the focal point or idea gives you tremendous control.
Meditation empowers the person to recognize pain, minimize it's impact, and even ignore or eliminate it. At first, one should not turn to meditation exclusively for pain relief, since it takes some years to master; however, there are some immediate benefits available to the beginner, and meditation will not interfere with other pain relievers. In time, you will be able to control your pain without medication, and that is a wonderful feeling.
