Meditation and attitude work hand in hand. From the attitude that you have when you first begin meditating to challenging your attitude as you grow in your meditation skills, you’ll find that you will continually question your changing attitude. For many, meditation will change their attitude in a subtle, natural manner and you may not be consciously aware that your it has changed for the better.
Most people who begin meditation discover that keeping an open mind is best. If your mind is open, it is also open to change. One exercise that many people perform is to think about a situation or person that they perceive as negative, and meditate on it. During the meditation session, the person allows any negative feelings to arise without trying to stop them, but rather to become aware of them.
If you become aware of many negative feelings associated with the person or situation, then ask yourself what could happen to change those feelings into positive ones. Through this exercise you can release the person/situation from judgment and develop more understanding, changing your attitude from negative to positive.
Regardless of what level you are at in meditation, you will continually check your attitude and work on improving it by releasing hatred, bitterness and animosity. As you develop your character and grow in understanding and enlightenment, you’ll start challenging your attitude regarding your purpose for meditation as well.
Meditation provides a vast amount of benefits and some may be tempted to keep those benefits for him or herself. The more you meditate the more you’ll begin to focus less on yourself and start to focus on others. That attitude change will shift from your private, quiet moments of meditation and reflection and will soon be transparent in your relationships with others.
