How many times during the day do you stress about the future? What will you make for dinner? Can you afford college for your unborn children? The economy may get better, but what if it gets worse? Is my sister still mad at me for something I did a few weeks back? Have you ever asked yourself these questions or ones that are similar? If you have, you may have a problem focusing on the past or worrying about the future. The past is gone and there is nothing that can be done to change it. Tomorrow will come and there are only a few things that can be done to change that. The present is passing you by as you are looking forward or looking back. Everyday mindfulness is teaching yourself a set of skills geared toward helping reduce stress and worries and keeping your focus on the here and now.

Worry about the future can be very time consuming and cause a lot of undue stress. Everyday mindfulness is learning how to live in the present and enjoy each moment, instead of letting them all pass by. Mindfulness is learning how to be here, now and be happy with that. Incorporating everyday mindfulness into your daily life can be a challenge at first. Below are some steps to help guide you in adding everyday mindfulness to your life.

The first thing you can do for everyday mindfulness is to practice meditation. The art of meditation is all about breathing, relaxing, focusing, and opening your mind to the things you are experiencing now. Meditation doesn't have to be difficult. Simply find a quiet place in the house free from distractions. Sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, and quiet down the mind. By practicing meditation, everyday mindfulness will begin to come naturally.

Another easy thing you can do for everyday mindfulness is deep breathing. Sounds too good to be true, but it isn't. Simply focus on your breathing every few hours. This can be done at work or at home, it's that easy. Make sure you are breathing from the stomach instead of the chest. Inhale deeply through the nose and exhale out the mouth. Deep breathing will calm you down when stress starts building and it will keep your mindset on the presence.

Listening to music can keep you relaxed and your mind clear. The music should be of a slower tempo like new age, classical, or soft-rock. Take a few moments each day to really listen to the beat, sound, and lyrics, if there are any. Concentrate on the present. Practice this type of everyday mindfulness to teach your mind not to wander off. If you find you are compiling a shopping list instead of listening to the music, stop that thought process and bring it back to the presence.

Mindfulness is simply about living in the presence and enjoying life at each moment. Practicing everyday mindfulness helps develop new habits and gets rid of the old ones. Learning how to be mindful will enhance your life and help you life it to the fullest instead of letting it pass you by as you are concentrating too far into the future.
