meditationCommunion with Earth, the Source of our Spirituality

These days, the humanity finds itself facing multiple challenges: shortage of natural resources, an increased number of untreatable diseases, pollution, religious conflicts and wild consumerism. All these led to an unparalled crisis of our civilization whose cause can be found in forgetting about the Earth spirituality and in distorting our relationship with all its elements. All the drawbacks that humanity is facing at this moment are rooted in the false belief that us, the human beings, master the Earth and even created some part of it, when the truth is that, on the contrary, Earth is the place we come from, it is our master and our mother. We belong to the Earth, it's not the Earth which belongs to us. We feed ourselves from the Earth, we do not feed it. Without Earth being healthy we are not healthy either, without connecting to the Earth spirituality, our spirits are not alive.

Several theories were developed as answer to the loss of connection between human beings and their mother Earth, each of them trying to promote ways to re-establish it. Either they are called spiritual ecology, deep ecology, Earth-based spirituality, eco-psychology, feminist ecology, creation spirituality or Gaia consciousness, they all lay on the same idea of the existence of an Earth spirituality that humans need to link again to, in order to retrieve themselves and overcome the challenges that they face as a community.

Human beings' origin in the earthly nature arises as a simple truth, whether we embrace Darwin's evolutionist theory or the genesis as the Church presents it. Our ancestors connected their lives to the Earth spirituality and even some isolated indigenous communities go on today living in harmony with the Earth. And yet us, the civilized world, we do not only forget that only by living in harmony with the Earth we can build spirituality, but, sometimes, in our relation with nature, we even loose our humanity. That's why interdisciplinary theories have been developed and even Gaia, the ancient Goddess of Earth, is often used to personify the Earth spirituality, in a tentative to embody this idea and make it easier to apply to our behavior.

Thomas Berry, a cultural historian who dedicated part of his work to the Earth spirituality, envisaged this concept as an Earth Community. In his opinion, humans have considered that everything non-human was of lesser value and installed a human governance on Earth, that is only of benefit for them at individual level, not as a large community. According to Berry, Earth spirituality can become again the driver of our lives if we recognize ourselves as nothing more than one piece of the entire earth life community and drop any practice of dominating the rest of the nature. The same idea of an Earth spirituality based on the sense of community was also expresses by the Thai Buddhist monk Buddhadasa Bhikkhu, with the following words: "When we realize that the world is a mutual, interdependent, cooperative enterprise" then we can build a noble environment. If our lives are not based on this truth, then we shall perish."
