Dolphin Meditation
Meditation often uses powerful natural symbols as part of its processes. There are several reasons for this. First of all, no matter how much we advance technologically, we are still human beings and the sounds, sights, and smells of nature relax and soothe us. Also, nature is full of symbolisms that are very easily recognizable by almost everyone, as is shown by the fact that animals, plants, and geographical terms have been included in art, names of organizations, flags, and religions all throughout history.
Among the animals that are often used for symbolism, the dolphin is one of the most recognizable ones. In fact, there is a well-known meditation technique called Dolphin Meditation, which was built around this animal, its habitat, its personality and traits, and what it represents.
The dolphin is a bit of a hybrid, since it lives on the sea all its life, like a fish, but it’s a mammal, and therefore it requires breathing in order to live. This makes it a great symbol for meditation techniques that deal with the elements of water and air. In meditation, water usually symbolizes relaxation and calmness. On the other hand, air symbolizes breathing, which is very important for a proper meditation session, even more so when you conjure up the powerful breathing control that a dolphin has.
Personality-wise, the dolphin represents intelligence, and it’s considered one of the most (if not the most) intelligent animals that there are. Since one of the goals of meditation is mind training, the analogy is more than fit. Moreover, despite their size, dolphins are never considered threatening, but helpful, claming, and carefree animals; qualities that are more than welcome in any training session.
The exact process of Dolphin Meditation will depend on the personal preferences or teachings of your meditation guide. However, in general, it relies heavily on visualization.
As with all types of meditation, you will have to prepare beforehand. Always wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and have all your body needs satisfied before you start, so that your mind isn’t distracted by hunger, thirst, sleep, or tiredness. Moreover, since Dolphin Meditation revolves around relaxation and breathing, practitioners that are tired will tend to fall asleep.
You usually have to start by imagining yourself in a calm environment by the sea, usually a quiet beach or a small house near the sea. The idea is to slowly concentrate and visualize each element to the point of almost having the real sensation. For example, feeling the air running through one’s hair, smelling the salty wind, listening to the waves as they crash, feeling the wet sand beneath our feet, etc.
When you are in tune with the image you created, you have to imagine a dolphin coming to see you. At this point, the technique varies greatly according to each guide or trainer. Some of them just have you visualize the dolphin playing in the water, while others will ask you to visualize you and the dolphin communicating. There are even some that will ask you to join the dolphin in a small trip (sometimes above the water, sometimes under the water), which usually includes visiting a beautiful, sacred, or enlightening place.
Dolphin meditation’s benefits include relaxing, and the elimination of stress and anxiety. It’s also a relatively fun practice, which also explains its popularity.
