Consciousness vs. Spirituality
The outer space is thought to be at this point in the humanity’s evolution the next frontier of our knowledge, but the truth is that the inner space is equally unknown to us.
When talking about the human inner world, we use words like “consciousness” or “spirituality” without realizing that they might be different concepts, referring to different sides of us. All we know is that they are related to the assembly of our feelings, emotions, thoughts and perceptions. The confusion around the consciousness and spirituality is just one proof of how familiar we are to everything that lies beyond our physical presence.
It’s difficult to accurately define consciousness and spirituality. Probably, for each of them, there are as many definitions as individuals. However, it is important to know the similarities and the differences between consciousness and spirituality and the way they interrelate for the human beings’ transformation into a whole.
The main similarity between consciousness and spirituality is, as mentioned above, that they both refer to the inner side of us. Taking what is common in all definitions, we can say that consciousness means becoming aware of what we experience, while spirituality means becoming aware and finding a greater meaning in everything that we experience. In other words, consciousness is built on awareness, spirituality is built on awareness plus connection to a greater meaning. From this perspective, consciousness is a stage in achieving spirituality. Or better said, in releasing spirituality or achieving it at a higher level. Both consciousness and spirituality are inherent features of us as human beings. But they exist within us in a latent form, until something independent or not of our will determines us to take steps for unleashing them, starting with becoming aware, going through developing consciousness and, then, climbing to a higher level of spirituality. If one of them fails to manifest, the manifestation of the following stage is not possible.
That’s why becoming conscious of your experiences and, then, developing spirituality, must come naturally. During a radio show, a reverend named Dale Blackford, pointed out that too many efforts in becoming a spiritual person could diminish our consciousness. According to him, sometimes, when we focus too much on being spiritual we start to avoid what is difficult about being human. We lack awareness of our experiences and without awareness we lack consciousness as well. Without consciousness, we have a fake spirituality.
Trying to reach high levels of spirituality, by skipping the stages of awareness and consciousness is like trying to make light, by turning off the dark. Consciousness is not about making a selection of what we want to accept and live with and spirituality is not about developing positive feelings and attitudes, but about finding a greater meaning in everything we experience, no matter how negatively this may impact us. The levels at which we can develop consciousness and spirituality are boundless and our efforts in going beyond as many as possible are part of our human evolution.
