The Four Consciousness Levels
Consciousness has to do with your awareness of things that are happening now or current memory of something that happened in the past. They include all your thoughts, memories, feelings, and emotions as they are happening. At its most basic level, it is your own personal awareness of everything going on around you. Along with awareness there are four consciousness levels those seeking enlightenment work to gain knowledge about. Learning these different consciousness levels can help you develop a deeper sense of understanding and help create more awareness in your daily life.
The first of the consciousness levels is sleep.
The sleep stage is about as simple as that, the person is sleeping. This can be a sleep brought on by drowsiness or by medications or it can also be a coma or comatose state. During this first of the
consciousness levels, the person is not responsible for their actions; mainly because no action is going on. The person is not aware of the things going on around them and is oblivious to anything except perhaps the dreams they are dreaming.
The second of the consciousness levels is known as waking sleep.
This level is called waking sleep because although the person may seem awake all their movements seem mechanical and almost robotic. They are creatures of habit and routine and are unaware of what they do each and every day. Life seems to have little to no meaning for them. These people wake up, get ready for work, go to work, come home, make dinner, watch television, and go to bed. This is their routine all day, every day. There is not much depth to them but they will become upset if their routine is disturbed in any way.
Self-awareness is the third of the consciousness levels.
This level involves learning to be
aware of oneself as an object. It is as if you are looking down or over at yourself and silently observing your own actions. You are aware of yourself, but you are not making judgments or opinions; you are simply watching. This is one of the deeper consciousness levels, because you start to become aware of the things you are doing and take responsibility for your actions. The actions are no longer robotic and you may start to wonder why you are following a particular routine every day.
The final of the consciousness levels is objective awareness.
This is by the far the deepest of the consciousness levels and the hardest to reach. This level is observing the world objectively or without identifying and labeling each and every thing. It is learning to recognize events as they happen and simply take everything in without judgment. It is a deep connection with everything going on around you, but without the old ideals we have been raised with.
Working through all the consciousness levels involve moving away from the "I" and viewing yourself as just another object in the world. Buddhists practice
meditation daily in order to reach the highest of the consciousness levels. You don't have to be Buddhist to use meditation in order to heighten your own awareness or seek out enlightenment.
